The geographical area does not matter in the case of registering the Internet domain. Therefore, if running an online business, you cannot consider the Internet domain devoted to a name under which another company with the same name operates in your industry.

I strongly recommend not choosing extensions other than .COM, unless the geography of the target market is important to you. For example, a person who is in the UK would buy the extension .CO.UK and someone in Canada may purchase CA. When someone a certain company/person has already chosen a name with the extension .COM and you still select the same name with but with the extension .NET extension, you are only giving the positive result of your efforts away. In fact, you are giving your efforts to the competing company because it has registered the right domain (.COM).
