A Signed Contract Is Only the First Step
Back in Florida, we find Steve once again in his apartment. It’s early morning. Steve, in his robe, makes coffee; he looks very tired. Jetlag and ‘other’ stuff. A few days have passed by. The doorbell rings. He crosses the living room to the door, opens it, and Greg enters. “Yo, dude,” Greg says. “How you doing, man? What, you been up all night?” “I’ve tried.
I mean...long night. So, what’s new?” “No, no, no - this isn’t about me, you’re the man of the hour! Come on, how’d it go in New York? You nail that job good?” “Ah...you could say that. I signed the contract, and they’re starting things up this week,” Steve says, excited, but tired. “Yee-ha! Oh, we have to celebrate. I’m going to call the whole gang together.
We are truly painting this town red,” says Greg, very excited. “Easy, Greg. This is only a first step. Let’s not go off halfcocked – I’ve been doing that most of the night. I mean… this is only the first step, you know?” “What are you saying?” Greg asks. Steve waits before responding and then, “Just because I’m getting published, doesn’t mean I’m going to be the next Rowling or King.
It’s a long, hard road ahead.” “Yeah-yeah. Okay, I get the point. Still, you’re getting published - that’s cause for celebration. Now, come on - tonight, we party. Okay, my man?” Greg asks. “Yeah – okay,” Steve says confirming. “Now, how about we get to work? We’ve got some changes to the website to review, before I give them to Larry to input.
So, let’s-” Greg trails off, motioning to the door. “Ah...how about later, Greg? I’ve got a few...positions to work on right now?” Steve asks. “Ah...Okay, sure, man. Yeah, why not? You deserve a break today - you’ve earned it. Okay, I’ll call you later,” says Greg, walking out Steve’s apartment door. After Greg leaves, Steve sits down to work and checks his phone.
