Steve's Golf Daydream: Hello, Ball
Almost much too loudly but still in a whisper, Steve reminded himself, “Nope, no way, Nothing illegal! Illegal is definitely not for me.” The sounds of the party mixed with the very real aroma of alcohol and the imagined aroma of extreme wealth caused Steve to drift into a daydream. Soon he found himself at the first hole of a large, fancy golf course. He was dressed in extremely expensive clothes and being driven to the tee by his caddy in a large, decked-out golf cart. The thing was practically a limo! Actually, yes. In his daydream, it became a luxurious limousine that had been modified into a beautiful stretch limo-golf cart for the magnificent course. Steve got out and stepped to the tee. The caddy retrieved a ball, club, and tee from the cart - all of solid gold. Setting everything up for Steve, the caddy placed the golden club in Steve's hands and positioned him in front of the ball. Steve stepped up to the ball, looked down at it, and then looked out over the fairway. “So, what do I do first?” he asked.
“You address the ball, take aim, and shoot.” His caddy, dressed in white and holding a large leather golf bag trimmed in the appropriate gold, quietly leaned away from Steve and the conversation, perhaps for his own safety.
“Address the ball?” Steve asked, clearly confused. “Ah… Okay,” he muttered before looking down at the ball. “Hello, ball! I’m going to hit you now. Warning! This might hurt!” He aimed, took a swing at the ball, and missed. He looked back out onto the fairway and then noticed the caddy trying to hide a smile and pointing at the ball, still sitting on the tee.
Steve’s caddy leaned in again and whispered, “It's still there, Sir.”
“Oh, yes, of course.” Steve tried to be cool and said, “That was just a practice shot. Don’t count that one! Now, you just watch this. He took another swing, tearing out a huge divot. Swinging again, as hard as he possibly could, he missed so badly that he stumbled to the ground. Lying on his back, he stared at the sky. Off in the distance of reality, he heard the voices of the party guests, demanding more drinks and faster service. His daydream ended abruptly. “Hmm, maybe I'll stick to basketball or...something,” he mumbled to himself.
