"Beyond That Is Pure Greed": Signing the Book Contract

“Well, I must say, Hillary,” the agent began, “it looks like you've snagged a real winner this time. If this book does as well as we expect, the two of you will make out like bandits!”

“Yes, it's not often you find a writer like Steve. The boy is quite gifted, in so many ways. And, I'm not at all concerned about making money for me,” Hillary said.

“Oh really?” asked the agent.

“I am more than comfortable, my friend. My dear husband, may he rest in peace, always believed that a person only needs a certain amount to live on. Beyond that is pure greed!” said Hillary, assertively.

“Ah, I see. Huh, a very wise man,” the agent said uncomfortably.

“Yes he was. I do miss him,” Hillary said, looking down slightly and playing with her hands.

“Well, in that case, young Mister Lowe here is looking to make out quite well,” said the agent confidently.

“Yes, I think so, and the dear boy deserves it; he is one hard worker, let me tell you,” Hillary agreed.

“Well, then, I'll let you two get going. I've spoken to our people; we're ready to get started,” said the agent, wrapping up the conversation and rising from his seat.

“Excellent! I think we should kick it off back home. You know how the local press eats that sort of thing up - the old ‘local boy makes good’ sort of thing,” Hillary suggested, also rising from her seat and moving toward the agent, her hand outstretched to shake his.

“You got it. We'll do the press release, line up some radio and TV spots and interviews, and get the ball rolling,” the agent said, extending his hand as well.
