How to Apply for a Government Grant in Canada: Research, Qualify, Apply
There are hundreds of ways to receive a grant from the government. For instance, there are 832 programs, including agriculture, art works and many other businesses, in only one of the sources in which the government invests. Some governmental grants are ex gratia, some others are low-interest or interest-free loans, and a grant might be in the form of tax exemptions. Each of the three levels of government has its own aid and grants, but most of the credit belongs to the provincial and federal governments, and then comes the municipality.
In a nutshell, there are three main steps in the process of receiving a governmental grant: research and investigation about types of financial grants and their costs; evaluating your level of qualification; and applying by filling in the corresponding forms.
Just like everything else, you must first do your research to find out what programs are running regarding grants in your line of work and what cost they require. After all, it is not easy to receive a governmental grant.
The next step is to see how qualified you are. Many of such aids are issued for non-profit businesses. You can register a corporation either as a non-profit or a for-profit corporation. When you review the conditions required for receiving a grant, you realize many of them include NGOs and charities, so you should not waste your time there. Sometimes, if you want a governmental grant worth 3 million dollars, the condition is that you provide half of it by yourself. You may stop right there due to lack of money. You should not get into a program irrelevant to your business, because that is just a waste of time.
The next step is to request the grant. You need to fill in the forms, send them, and enter your documents and business plan in the corresponding application. This is a very complicated process which demands experts to handle it. Each program contains a contact number for guidance. You must always be in touch with the person who provides guidance. Most of the time, these people even help you with the correct sentence structure and appropriate phrasing. Keep in mind the last deadline for offering the request.
The sections regarding governmental grants have smart applications and evaluate you by the way you fill in those applications. For example, the least score to go to the next level might be 75 out of 100. If you get a score lower than 75, your documents will not even be checked. If you receive a higher score, the experts announce their opinions about paying the grant.
Some programs have no financial restriction, meaning even if 50 corporations manage to get approval, they will receive the grants. Others are only able to pay up to a certain limit each year. In exchange for its aid, the government will not ask for any share from you, but through yearly reports you should elaborate on the way you are spending the money.
