Choosing a Business Name in Canada: the .com, the Trademark, the Product

The first step in corporate registration is choosing a name. Search your selected name to make sure no similar name is registered. There are service providers with access to these names, and they will charge you 50 to 150 dollars to give you a report about your selected name.

While selecting a name, make sure its internet domain with the suffix .com is not registered. Other suffixes are not very authentic, and .com is the important one. For big and promising businesses, the name of the business matters a lot. However, you should understand that .ca works fine for a local business in Canada.

If your business is art related, consider the law affairs related to the author's copyright so you will not face any problem later after spending huge costs. When you intend to register a name, the associated office searches the name among the registered ones to make sure it is not registered as a trademark. You may use a name of a corporation for yourself, but you can never apply for a registered trademark of another corporation, because they can easily sue you.

The name of the corporation does not matter much. What is important is the name of your products. Employ expert counselors in this regard so you will not face legal issues because of using already-registered names, for instance. Big corporations have powerful legal teams, and they may sue you.

To keep the name better and stronger, you can register the name and also the trademark. When you register a corporation in a province, the name of the corporation belongs to you only within that province, and someone else can use the name in another province. A sole enterprise does not protect the name of a business at all. In order to protect your business brand, you must register it in the form of a trademark or under the title of a corporation.

Spend a little time and money on the name search and on expert advice at the start. It is far cheaper than changing a name after you have printed, advertised and built a brand around it.
